"An Informed Voter Is The Best Defense Against Bad Government"

"Do not touch the PFD.  Do not hold a special session"

By Mike Carney.  June 21, 2004

Again, and again, and again, the voters of this state have said not to touch the PFD or to change it in any way.

Do not hold a special session. It is a waste of money and time. You have already had session and didn't pass Murkowski's "plan". I think Murkowski may be the sole person is this state that supports his plan. I hope the rest of the voters are paying attention to who is supporting this. I know that know I am.

You know as well as I do that there is no "Budget Crisis". There is a spending crisis.

No on all taxes.
Don't touch the PFD.
Cut Spending.

Live with in your means and balance the budget with what you have like the rest of us. That is your job. Your job is not to make up things to spend dollars on so that you can raise taxes or take the PFD. Taking from the people to give to the people is an ineffective way to do your job. It's like using your credit card to pay another credit card.

I know that you cannot make everybody happy but...it was the people that elected you to serve them, not the state workers, school districts, health departments, courts, or the American Lung Association...but the people. You work for the people, right?

You want some budget cutting ideas?.. here's a couple:

I read a while back the Frank Murkowski wants a new jet so he can jet off to far away places at our expense. I did some math and the 36 trips last year that he took would have cost $72,000 if he'd purchased 1st class plane tickets on private carriers. That would have saved the State about $150,000. And the $2,000,000 for a new jet? "But it's federal money". Who do you think pays for federal money? We all do. I believe that if there were ever any "homeland security" issues, the Air Force bases would surely lend a hand and it wouldn't cost a dime.

The $300,000 for the Fairbanks 55? I think we could have done with out that.

The $25,000 a day for a special session...well who knows what that's going to add up to.

We're up to $2,500,000 already...all at Frank Murkowski's hands. You'd think for somebody that wants to balance the budget, he'd start by curbing his own spending. Now why would the people believe that he wants to use the PFD to "balance" the budget rather than to inflate the budget? Does he think we are that gullible? You already have the power to balance the budget, you don't need the PFD or a special session to do that.

I think that you as representatives of the people need to look at other ways to balance the budget if it is really that much of a concern at all. Frank Murkowski's plan is nothing more than a way to take from the people. The only "guarantee" we'd be getting is that the inflated budget would get more inflated, the PFD's would be smaller than they should be and we'd have a new governor next election.
