Honorary Member Page "An Informed Voter Is The Best Defense Against Bad Government"
ALASKA VOTERS ORGANIZATION RESOLUTION 2003-11
This Resolution is to honor Mr. Mike Armour of Haines, Alaska for his part in reducing the size and cost of local government.
WHEREAS, Mike Armour is an ordinary citizen with no prior political experience; and
WHEREAS, Mike Armour resides in a community with the highest mill rate in the region, a severely depressed local economy, and a municipal government that had passed two consecutive deficit budgets; and
WHEREAS, Mike Armour did the research required to propose effective corrective solutions for the mill rate and deficit spending problems in Haines; and
WHEREAS, Mike Armour has never been involved in the ballot initiative process before; and
WHEREAS, Mike Armour recognized that the framers of the Alaska Constitution gave the people of this state a powerful tool in the initiative process. His successful use of ballot initiatives in Haines shows that it is possible for any concerned individual to fight against excessive government spending.
WHEREAS, Mike Armour wrote two ballot initiatives that would pass or fail based on their own merit. The first initiative requires the municipality of Haines to have a balanced budget. This passed by a vote of 473 to 323. The second initiative reduced the real property tax cap from 3% to 1%, which passed by a vote of 405 to 399; and
WHEREAS, Mike Armour is a citizen concerned about the future of Haines and a great role model for Alaskans everywhere that believe a small effective and responsive government is best;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Alaska Voters Organization, Board of Directors, that Mr. Mike Armour of Haines Alaska be given a Quality Award with our highest regard and gratitude; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED that Mr. Mike Armour be given an Honorary Membership in the Alaska Voters Organization;
