"An Informed Voter Is The Best Defense Against Bad Government"

July 2002 Survey

See how your opinion compares with the other 837 Alaskan's that responded to our July survey:

Question 1.  Are you a registered voter in Alaska?

     A.  Yes:  97.5%

     B.  No:  2.5%

Question 2.  The State Legislature recently passed a $1,290,378,015 (one point three BILLION dollar) capital budget (SB 2006) that funded mosquito machines for Larson Bay, paved parking lots in Anchorage city parks, gave grants to the Arctic winter games among other things, but failed to pay for construction of needed schools.  Do you agree with this legislature’s priorities?

     A.  Yes:  4.5%

     B.  No:  95.5%

Question 3.  Total state spending (operating [HB 403 & HB 404] budget & capital [SB 2006] budget) will be over $8,000,000,000 (eight BILLION dollars) again this year.  This is approximately $13,000 for every man, woman, and child in Alaska, which is about triple the national average.  With oil revenues rapidly declining and the constitutional budget reserve almost depleted, do you feel this amount is:

     A.  Too high:  93.5%

     B.  Just right:  4.5%

     C.  Too low:  2%

Question 4.  Governor Knowles and the Legislature have been telling us about budget cuts made this year.  The Governor has even gone so far as to close some state parks and highway maintenance stations due to these cuts.  In truth this years operating budget is $545,362,400 higher and has 649 new state full time job positions than last year’s enacted budget.  Why do you think these statements are contradictory?

     A.  Our government officials have intentionally deceived us:  68.5%

     B.  Our government officials do not really know the truth:  18%

     C.  Other:  13.5%

Question 5.  Do you feel that partisan politics have been good or bad for Alaska?

     A.  Good:  26.5%

     B.  Bad:  73.5%

Question 6.  Would you support a constitutional amendment that would require our legislators to meet via teleconference from the local Legislative Information Office (LIO) rather than going to Juneau?

     A.  Yes:  82.5%

     B.  No:  17.5%
